Respite for the biomass market?

The globalBIOMASS team made the most of a chance to meet buyers, sellers and traders of biomass from all over the world earlier this month, as they gathered for the Argus Biomass conference in London.

Over many a coffee (and a fair few beers), they built a picture of a market under significantly less pressure than it was only a few weeks ago. With the heating season behind us, demand easing, and winter burn possibly not as high as earlier anticipated, it is now less about scrambling for cargoes than looking ahead.

But memories of this winter’s shortages linger, and it seems parties are stocking ahead of the autumn build-up and already looking for forward cargoes for Q3 and Q4.

For globalBIOMASS, that’s great news. A balanced market, with supply distributed across a range of market participants, presents more opportunities for onward trade as those who hold material look to optimise their positions ahead of winter. And where better to buy and sell those cargoes – and make a bit of money doing it – than on an online marketplace with global reach?

Our initial proposal for a workable standard specification and major contract terms is now out there, being stress-tested by market participants on both sides of the pond. Stay tuned as we firm up our assumptions for a delivery timeline that is viable, but also allows cargoes to be re-traded in a nimble and effective way.
